In order maintain healthy relationships and to be able to convey our thoughts and feelings to other people, we all have to resort to many different types of communication in our day to day life. Communicating is part of being a human being. Without it, we just wouldn’t be able to live in this world, as there would be no way of alerting others of how we feel and what we need.
When talking about the different methods which we use in our daily lives to communicate, we can distinguish three main types. Most of our communications will fall under one of the following, or it may even be a combination of two or even all three of them.
Oral Communication – This happens whenever we communicate using words. Ever since we are born into this world, we are constantly learning new words and ways in which to speak, continuing to do so until the day we die or lose the ability to speak. It is often the most convenient and effective way to say just about anything, even when we need to give somebody highly detailed accurate information. When it comes to oral communication skills, there can be a huge difference between the skill levels of two people, which is why many strive to improve their oral skills by attending professional communication training classes.
Non-Verbal Communication – After oral communication, the next most used way of communicating is through non-verbal methods, which include the likes of facial expressions, gestures and other similar actions that we perform using our body parts. This type of communication can be helpful in complementing oral communication, but it can also be used on its own in certain situations. Non-verbal communication can also tell a lot more about a person than you may think at first, which is skilled body language coaching encourages people to always be alert about one’s body at all times.
Written Communication – Another way of communicating, written communication is a little less commonly used, but it nevertheless important for specific reasons. Writing information down can be the ideal solution whenever we need to convey very important data or something that is too complicated to convey with our words alone. Other reasons to use written communication is the fact that written records will last a long time, which means that we can use our writing to convey messages that could be understood many years down the line. Due to the way in which written information is processed, one should always make sure that whatever he or she writes can be clearly read, as well as being as precise as possible to only write what is absolutely necessary.
